Carnegie is pleased to announce the Xorel Responsible Return Program. Carnegie's Xorel is an innovative and industry-leading
textile solution that has earned both MBDC Cradle to Cradle Silver and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold certification. To continue the environmentally conscious life-cycle of Xorel, Carnegie’s Responsible Return program will enable end users to return any Xorel
product removed from a job site to Carnegie for responsible reuse. By initiating this program, Carnegie takes full life cycle
responsibility for the Xorel product.
There are three opportunities for reuse of Xorel product:
- Unbacked Xorel will be shipped to a recycling plant that will use the fabric to produce other items made from
polyethylene.
- Paper-backed or acrylic-backed Xorel will be collected by Carnegie and shipped to a Waste to Energy plant less than
five miles from Carnegie's facility. Xorel has an extremely high BTU rating (higher than coal) and this will help to generate
clean energy from a product that has reached the end of its useful life.
- Xorel with X-Protect Barrier Backing can either go to a Waste to Energy plant or it can be recycled with the Unbacked
Xorel as it is also composed of polyethylene.
In addition, Carnegie will provide a list of local Waste to Energy plants around the country which may accept this material from
local projects. This will negate the need for long shipping routes.
How the program will work?
After paperwork is approved end users ship material back to Carnegie. Carnegie covers freight charges when a new order of Xorel is placed by that client and Carnegie provides documentation that the material has been returned for reuse or energy.
The Full Life Cycle of Xorel:
Material Inputs and Manufacturing – Carnegie has full control over both the materials being used to produce Xorel yarn and over the complete manufacturing process. In addition, we have the full cooperation of our manufacturing partners in assuring not just quality but sound environmental and safety standards. Our protocols have been studied and certified by MBDC.
Effect in Use – Xorel has been studied with over sixty individual tests from cleanability to durability to VOC content and fire safety. Carnegie has documented the performance and safety of the product in interior spaces through independent test laboratories; Xorel has also been certified for indoor air quality by SCS Certification Systems.
Disposal and Reuse – With the new Responsible Return program, when Xorel reaches the end of its life, Carnegie is able to assure both specifiers and end users that the returned product will contribute to the manufacture of clean energy or another useful and environmentally safe product.
