Carnegie Presents: 2023 Trend Report

Four Macro Trends Shaping Design in 2023

Radically transparent, open, and collaborative, our Creative Studio is your partner in design - a creative wonderland that serves as an extension to your own studio. Our textile designers, weavers, artists and painters all work in rhythm, collecting and contextualizing research to bring you strategic forecasts essential for design and space management.

For over 70 years Carnegie has championed responsible innovation through Materials That Matter™, proving that beautiful high-performance solutions can be delivered sustainably. Guided by this philosophy, we are introducing four macro trends synthesized from extensive research to help inspire and guide you in future projects.

Eco Now & Forever

As environmental threats become more frequent and severe, the fashion and building industries alike are taking a step back to evaluate their practices and consider how to better impact our planet. Business of all sizes are practicing accountability for their environmental and social impact, leading to a cycle of corporations and consumers influencing one another in a collective effort to do better.

As a leader in sustainable textiles and a certified B Corporation, we are proud to have built a reputation for our ongoing commitment to the environment. Carnegie will continue to innovate and design with intention, source responsibly, and always keep the environment top of mind.

Looking Ahead:

Just when you thought we couldn't get any greener, we ventured outdoors. Our certifiably awesome Xorel Biobased Indoor/Outdoor textile is made with 85% biobased PE content, making it the world's first and only plant-based commercial-grade outdoor performance textile.

No finishes. No coatings. No surprises.

Blast to The Past(s)

There isn't just one time period trending, it's all of them at the same time. A combination of all things retro is emerging to create something new. With striking parallels between past and current backlashes to injustice and consumerism, we seek inspiration from different time periods, collaging and translating a melange of visual elements until something seemingly new is born. Perhaps we are seeking to escape from the turbulence of today's global conflicts and prevailing uncertainty.

Looking Ahead:

This year's coming collections are as memorable as the generations that inspired them. Highlights include bold upholstery patterns embodying the gestural lines, subtle tweeds, stonewashed linens, and funky plaids of the 80s.

Bare Authenticity

In response to our desire to make meaningful connections and intentional decisions that prioritize health and happiness, we crave experiences filled with richness, community relationships, and local culture. From "Back of House" to "Heart of House," we yearn to step into commercial spaces that feel like a second home—welcoming, honest, and familiar.

Looking Ahead:

A new collection of Biobased Xorel that tells a handmade story through fantastical expressions of pattern and design.

Phygital Dimension

Phygital blurs the line between physical and digital to the point where it is no longer distinguishable. Virtual worlds are addressing desires for "realism" by creating a more familiar and welcoming world while real life spaces are delivering digital shortcuts and tools with splashes of surrealistic expression.

Looking Ahead:

Pursuing a dichotomy between the slow process of artisanship and large scale production, we've encapsulated the essence of the the slow, repetitive, intentional process through durable, high performance products.
